WhatsApp back online after worldwide outage

WhatsApp experienced a major outage today, affecting the messaging app for two hours. The service began experiencing problems around 3 a.m. ET, with users being greeted with a "connecting" message. A "make sure your computer has an active internet connection" error message was also displayed on WhatsApp web. The problems affected users worldwide and were resolved around 5 a.m. ET.

"We are aware that some people had difficulty sending messages on WhatsApp today. "We've fixed the problem and apologize for any inconvenience," Meta spokesperson Joshua Breckman told The Verge.

This was the first major outage for WhatsApp since it went down last year as part of a massive outage that also affected Instagram, Messenger, Oculus, and Facebook. That outage lasted nearly six hours before it was resolved.
